Superman Returns

On the spur of the moment we called up Grandma (Barbara) and went to see Superman Returns lastnight. All I have to say is this... GO SEE THIS MOVIE!!!! After the first five minutes I said "WOW" and the story did not really begin yet. Like Batman Begins, Superman Returns deals with the relationships of the characters and not centering on the bad guys (like Batman Returns). This movie takes place five years after the Superman 2 movie. They are not counting Superman 3 or 4 (which is good because they were not at all good). I do expect an announcement of another Superman movie coming up and being released in the next couple of years.



One thing that I was very happy about was after the listing of the cast credits there is a dedication "This film is dedicated in loving memory of Christoper and Dana Reeve"

NEWS FLASH!!!!!

After I got all the phone calls, text pages, e-mails and postings I checked our machine and found a message. Had to listen to it about 4 times before it sunk in. It was Labor and Delivery at Harris HEB. They told me that they DID have ROOM for me to be induced TOMORROW! So we have to be there at 7am and we will have a baby sometime tomorrow.

Adam told me that if the kid is a little terror that he is blaming me.

False Alarm

Okay so I went and she checked it out and didn't think that it broke. She did a sono on me and saw that there was plently of water. My bladder got too excited seeing the toliet and I really had to pee. :(

So this is what is going on now. I am on the WAITING LIST to be induced tomorrow. If someone has their baby today then I will be induced tomorrow. IF NOT then I am on the list for next Tuesday June 13 (IF she has not arrived yet).

So that's the news for now.

Things have been happening in the past 12 hours that make me believe that today is the day. Grandma (Barbara) Eakins is will be here at 8:30 to pick me up to see if we can see the Doctor a couple of minutes early. Check Postcards from the pregnancy or here for updates.

I decided to reorganize my DVD collection today. I moved this DVD rack along with a couple CD holders in front of the fireplace. Not like we have ever or will ever use the fireplace, might as well make the space functional. My wife will roll her eye's when she reads this but I organized everything by rating... and alphabetized... and grouped the Disney, Muppets, and cartoons together.

Hey, I just graduated with a Master's in Library and Information Sciences people. I have to alphabetize! I left everything out of order for a year, I think that's long enough.

Besides what else was I supposed to do on a Holiday... while waiting for a baby to decide if she wants to be born.

Star Wars Celebration IV in Los Angeles To Mark 30th Anniversary of Saga
May 26, 2006

To celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Star Wars, Lucasfilm Ltd. and Gen Con LLC will throw the largest party ever for fans of the saga, taking over the entire Los Angeles Convention Center in May 2007 for five days filled with live entertainment, celebrities from all six movies, special film and video presentations, an exhibit of movie props and costumes, exclusive merchandise sold at a 24-hour-a-day store, pop culture tributes, immersive events, costume contests, and scores of additional activities.
Star Wars Celebration IV will fill the L.A. Convention Center from Thursday, May 24 to Monday, May 28, 2007. Admission to the first day of the event will be for worldwide members of the Official Star Wars Fan Club, many of whom will help plan and run special programming themselves. The convention will be open to the general public from Friday through Monday, Memorial Day.

"Generations of fans have loved Star Wars, many passing along the 'Star Wars gene' to their children," said Steve Sansweet, Director of Content Management and head of Fan Relations for Lucasfilm. "This is the first chance to celebrate all six movies in the saga-George Lucas' complete story-as well as the vibrant future of Star Wars. If you've ever been to one of our Celebrations-or if you haven't been before-this is the one not to miss."

Celebration III, a four-day event held in Indianapolis in April 2005, attracted more than 34,000 fans from all over the world. "We started getting questions about a possible Celebration IV even while the last convention was running," Sansweet noted. "So we're determined to far outstrip anything we've done before, both in size and scope, as well as introduce many first-time activities and lots of exclusives."

Lucasfilm is also working on other Star Wars-related events in the Los Angeles area just prior to Celebration IV, "so we're expecting Southern California to become 'Destination: Star Wars' from the weekend before through Memorial Day weekend," Sansweet said.

The convention announcement was made jointly by Lucasfilm Ltd. and Gen Con LLC. Gen Con will once again manage the convention on behalf of Lucasfilm and the Official Star Wars Fan Club. The Celebration IV announcement is being made a year in advance to give fans worldwide a chance to plan for a week-long "Destination: Star Wars" blow-out in Los Angeles.

Los Angeles is the ideal site for a 30th Anniversary convention, Sansweet said, since there are many Star Wars roots in the area. It was also the location of the first official Star Wars fan gathering, the 10th Anniversary Convention. Star Wars opened on May 25, 1977, on just 32 theater screens in North America, including Grauman's Chinese Theater on Hollywood Boulevard.

One of the highlights for fans at a Star Wars convention is the chance to buy unique merchandise, including an exclusive, limited-edition action figure. Because this has led to bottlenecks and long lines in the past, the Celebration IV store will be bigger than ever, self-service, well-stocked with merchandise, have plenty of check-out lanes...and be open 24 hours a day from the opening of the show on Thursday until the close on Monday!

"Gen Con is thrilled to be working again with Lucasfilm on this very special event," said Peter Adkison, owner of Gen Con LLC, producer of Gen Con Indy and other Gen Con events. "Together I know that we will produce a convention that will not only meet, but exceed, fans' expectations. With Lucasfilm 100% behind this show, it's going to be the biggest party in the history of the franchise. We are particularly focused on dramatically improving the selection and service in the Celebration store."

Stay tuned to starwars.com as your primary source for updates about programming, guests, activities, entertainment and exclusive merchandise at Celebration IV to be released as they are confirmed closer to the convention. Online ordering for tickets to the event and for discounted hotel rooms is scheduled to begin late summer/early fall. There will also be information on getting around Los Angeles, traveling to and from the Convention Center, and on shuttle buses available for convention-goers who are staying in the city.

So I work for the City of Euless now, which means part of what I do is pick the Pet of the Week for the website. I like to use that as an excuse to run by the shelter from time to time. That way I get to go play with the inmates. This orange cat here hasn't made the Pet of the Week yet, but maybe next time if no one has adopted him. His name is Oliver.

If you live anywhere near Euless, TX and are looking for a pet please give the animal shelter a look. They have lots of cats and dogs up for adoption that could use some nice homes. How can you turn down a face like Oliver's!?!

Well we knew it was going to happen sometime. Uncle George is going to release the UN-special edition versions of the original Star Wars Trilogy. I think this speaks for all the fans going out in September that will be buying this (even if we have 5 versions of it already)

Big Brain Cousin

Angela Hodges (or Angie as we call her) is my over-achieving cousin from my Mom's side of the family tree. She beat me to a bachelor's and a Master's. Now she's working on a law degree... and I won't be following her there. Now she's got a big fancy internship in the Attorney General of Texas' office. Let's all wish her the best of luck, cause she might need it (doubt it though, because she's just that good).

1st Day at Euless

Started my new job today as the Web Designer for the City of Euless. I meet a lot of people today, and I can't remember most of their names... but I'll get them down at some point! I even have an office! I've only ever had a cubicle up until now. I've got to bring my ipod tomorrow though... the office is quiet as a tomb. Also have to find something to put on the walls... they're quite bare at the moment.

Today is a New Day

The past few months have been a little crazy, but now that things are turning around it is time to post about it.  In January, I was living my cubicle life on the 3rd floor of a building in Richardson, TX.  I was spending my time thinking about my wife being 5-6 months pregnant with a bump of a belly growing every day.  It's a Friday so things are pretty good, then my supervisor comes by and asks me to come with her.  I'm thinking maybe it's time for the yearly evaluation or something, but we're headed all the way to the first floor... that's strange.

We go into the little area just to the right of the building entrance (if you were walking into the building), which is where the local HR department lives.  At this point my very slow brain is sure something is up.  Oddly enough after sitting and waiting for a minute or so, my friend Belinda comes out of the room with her supervisor.  As I head into the room she just left, I see my boss and an HR rep.  Yup, that's right folks I've been surplused.  Looks like I've got 60 days to find a new job in Cingular or be prepared to walk out the door.

Are we having fun yet?  I had already been looking outside, so I really wasn't very inclined to spend time looking inside.  Also I had my big final capstone thing for my Master's degree to worry about.  Something I'll have more to say in a bit, but for now let's just note that it took place smack in the middle of my last 60 days.  Besides worrying about the school stuff, I started the fun process of checking job listings every day and applying like crazy to any job that looked promising.  Some days were pretty stressful, but oddly enough I stayed pretty positive.

So the final day at Cingular crept up on me.  I did enjoy my last few weeks walking around the block with the ladies on my row and going out to lunch with friends.  Those same ladies ("the girls" are what I usually refer to them as) and others were kind enough to pile packages of diapers in my cube, while Belinda (who, BTW, was being laid off too but found another position one floor down) deftly distracted me by letting me tag along to the break room.  The friends I made while working at Cingular will be what I miss most... them and the Xerox copier that prints on both sides plus staples.

By the last day I had interviewed at a couple places and put my application in at many others.  My best prospects to date had been a job with a big company where a friend worked, the corporation that my Step-Mom-In-Law is a VP at (or at least one of the sub-companies), a job right here in Grapevine just off Main Street where a friend of my sister's works, and a job for Tarrant County College (TCC).  None of these jobs worked out though, as they were all filled by other people or the openings just didn't materialize.  Not to worry though, because I still had faith that everything would be fine.

Turns out my Mom had a curious dream not too long before March 28th (my last day) that encouraged her to look up an old friend working for the City of Euless.  She went to lunch with said friend who heard that some jobs might be opening up with the City.  Strangely enough for all the City, School, and other local job listings I had been looking at, the one place not on my daily watch list was the City of Euless.  Don't know why it wasn't, but now it was.

A Computer Specialist job was the posting that intrigued me, not quite what I was looking for but it would have been a nice change of pace.  Also I was really hoping to work for a City again, as my tenure with a giant soul sucking corporation (no offense, and please send the very nice severance check :-) has left me with a desire to serve and give back to my community.  I applied about a week before time was up.

Turns out the Computer Specialist job wasn't the only job coming up.  On my last day at Cingular, I decided to check the Euless listing again (had no reason to since I already applied, but I did it anyway).  Low and behold, a new job was listed.  Web Designer, which really is a perfect fit for my skills.  I spent my final afternoon re-filling out the Euless application (as you can't save what you fill out).  A manager even stopped to ask why I was still hanging around, but I was using my time wisely... also I had to give the Xerox copier (also a printer) one more spin!

To try wrap this up, it's been just over 2 weeks now and after a couple very nice interviews I got word that I start working again next Monday.  That's right, I'll be the new Web Designer for the City of Euless.  Time to break the khakis back out and get the cat hair off my button-up shirts.  Thanks for all the support, well-wishes, good vibes, and prayers... but don't think you can stop.  A new job is nothing.  I've got a bigger challenge just around the corner... baby Katie is less than 2 months away!!!

VACATION!!!!

I'm on vacation!!!! I don't have to go back to work until Wednesday!!!! *happy pregger swollen feet* I've been trying to schedule a vacation since Feb. but due to a co-worker on medical leave for 6 weeks since Feb., another worker quitting 30 minutes before she had to be at work, me training someone, doing the people who are out jobs, my job, I really couldn't take a vacation. Now people are back, new people are trained, and I am off to get some stuff done around the house, go to the Scarborough Faire, take a birthing class, see the Dr, and go out to lunch with an old boss of mine that I haven't see in almost 2 years.

Flickr Pro

I finally broke down and upgraded to a Flickr Pro account. It only costs about $25 a year and lets you post as many pictures you want (actually there's a monthly bandwidth limit of a few gigs, but I'll never come close to that). Considering the cost is about half a video game these days... it is inexpensive.

I'm just cheap. You all know it, so just smile and nod knowingly.

We went back to the specialist yesterday, which also happened to be Bridget's birthday. The doctor says Katie is so normal that she's boring and are sending us back to our normal doctor never to return (unless something odd happens). Katie agrees that the whole experience wasn't worth all drama. Here she is yawning in her boredom.

Connor's new fear

Connor is very special. He ADORES Adam. He puts up with Satine beating up on him to remind him that even if he has been in our family for 3 years he is still a guest in HER home. He looks cute and fluffy when he is curled up in a ball on the brown chair (that he blends into).

But now Connor has a new fear. A fear that has him waddeling out of the room so fast it's kind of funny.

The High School where I went is going to State Championships. They were number one in the nation last year for football.

Dragons to Play Katy At Noon on Saturday

The Carroll Dragons will defend their 5A State Championship title against Katy at Texas Stadium in Irving on Saturday. The game will begin at noon. Carroll is the home team and will sit on the usual side; Dragon fans should enter gate 3.

All tickets at the gate will be $10. Parking will open at 9 a.m.; gates open at 10 a.m.

The game will be broadcast as usual on KKGM 1630 AM and will also be televised on FOX Southwest. Metro Sports Communications will air the state championship beginning at 11 a.m. central standard time. In addition to airing on the flagship home of Carroll football (KKGM 1630-AM), the game will also be carried nationally on Sirius Satellite Radio (Channel 131).

Carroll fans inside Texas Stadium may listen to the broadcast on the special “Road Radio” feed, on 88.9 FM. Saturday's game can be heard worldwide on KKGM's website – www.kkgmam.com .

I will not be going to the game. We already have plans (which I would of rescheduled) and since it is on TV we can sit at home (where it is warm) and watch. Adam will probably read Harry Potter or work in the computer room.

My High School Art Teacher, In the News

My high school art teacher, Janie Cavender (Sanders back then), got herself into the newspaper. Looks like she's still busy making murals and such. I enjoy popping over to her website and looking at pictures she used to have hanging on the classroom walls.

Her classes were some of the best experiences I had during high school. I remember disagreeing with some of her advice on my projects, but she was right. I wish I had the time and resources to work on more art projects like I did back then.

I listen to KLUV at work (because they play alot of Beatles) and I listen to Jody Dean the morning guy. Before he signs off he always does some type of joke or something that he gets from listeners. I've seen this one before. This morning when he was reading it I had a vision that this could be me someday...



Mom's Brownie Recipe

Remove teddy bear from oven and preheat oven to 375.

Melt 1 cup margarine in saucepan.

Remove teddy bear from oven and tell Jr. "No, No."

Add margarine to 2 cups sugar. Take shortening can away from Jr. and clean cupboards.

Measure 1/3 cup cocoa.

Take shortening can away from Jr. again and bathe cat. (Adam and I believe that this would be Connor)

Apply antiseptic and bandages to scratches sustained while removing shortening from cat's tail.

Assemble 4 eggs, 2 tsp. vanilla and 1½ cups sifted flour.

Take smoldering teddy bear from oven and open all doors and windows for ventilation.

Take telephone away from Billy and assure party on the line the call was a mistake. Call operator and attempt to have direct dialed call removed from bill.

Measure 1 tsp. salt, ½ cup nuts and beat all ingredients well.

Let cat out of refrigerator. (Adam and I believe that this would be Satine...since she is an Ice Queen)

Pour mixture into well-greased 9x13-inch pan.

Bake 25 minutes.

Rescue cat and take razor away from Billy. Explain to kids that you have no idea if shaved cats will sunburn. Throw cat outside while there's still time and he's still able to run away.


Frosting

Mix the following in saucepan:

1 cup sugar

1 oz. unsweetened chocolate

¼ cup margarine

Take the darn teddy bear out of the @#$% broiler and throw it away. far away.

Answer the door and meekly explain to nice policeman that you didn't know Jr. had slipped out of the house and was heading for the street. Put Jr. in playpen.

Add 1/3 cup milk, dash of salt and boil, stirring constantly for 2 minutes.

Answer door and apologize to neighbor for Billy having stuck a garden hose in man's front door mail slot. Promise to pay for ruined carpet.

Tie Billy to clothesline.

Remove burned brownies from oven.

Thanksgiving and Sinus Infections

As you can see not much is going on since most of this is about a cold....We live very sad and boring lives...


Thanksgiving morning I woke up with a sore throat. Got worse as the day went on. Friday it was feeling better but I was blowing my nose. Decided that I could wait it out until Tuesday when I go see Dr Prentice for my (now) monthly baby appointment. Saturday morning I wake up at not being able to move. Because I have puds on both sides of my legs using them as pillows sleeping soundly (You know it is bad when Satine is on the bed most of the night. She knows when I am not feeling well). I got up and decided that I could not wait until Tuesday because I could feel the (now) sinus infection move to my chest. It was now turning into what my friend Wendy calls "The Plague". UHG! I've had this before. Last time was 4 days before I was getting married and not only was it a sinus it was also throat and ear infection (full blown plague). Words that saved me from that was telling the Dr. "I'm getting married on Friday and flying to Disney World on Saturday I need to get well now!" a shot in the 'hip' and anti-biotic did the trick.

But since I am 13 weeks preggers (that far along? wow!) Adam and I were at our Dr.'s clinic at Saturday morning to get drugs. I feel much better now. (breathing does help). Shopping with Teresa to get pregger clothes had to be postponed until this Weds.

Other than that we basically did nothing. Cleaned the house. Watched "That 70's Show" Season 3 DVD and played computer games. It was nice having 4 days off.

Appointment with Dr. Prentice is Tuesday at 2pm. I will post about the appointment on the baby's site when I get home.

Glenn Mitchell Died

Glenn Mitchell was the host of a radio show on KERA that I listened to every time I got in the car during the lunch hour. He was an amazing interviewer. I'd come to take the show for granted and now that Glenn is no more I feel like a part of my life has just been torn. Carpe Diem.

Martha Stewart Thanksgiving (NOT!)

Thanksgiving is around the corner. I will not be cooking turkey this year. My contribution to the holiday is Honey Baked Ham (which we are having in less than an hour at Mom and Dad Eakins house and Pumpkin Cake on Thursday that we will bring to G&G Hodges, Second Momma Teresa's and (if there is any left) At Grandma and Paw Paw Eakins in Granbury on Friday.

But in years to come we may have Thanks Giving at our house and I see this happening.......

Martha Stewart will not be dining with us this Thanksgiving. I'm telling you in advance, so don't act surprised. Since Ms. Stewart won't be coming, I've made a few small changes:

1. Our sidewalk will not be lined with homemade, paper bag luminaries. After a trial run, it was decided that no matter how cleverly done, rows of flaming lunch sacks do not have the desired welcoming effect.

2. Once inside, our guests will note that the entry hall is not decorated with the swags of Indian corn and fall foliage I had planned to make. Instead, I've gotten the kids involved in the decorating by having them track in colorful autumn leaves from the front yard. The mud was their idea.

3. The dining table will not be covered with expensive linens, fancy china, or crystal goblets. If possible, we will use dishes that match and everyone will get a fork. Since this IS Thanksgiving, we will refrain from using the plastic Peter Rabbit plate and the Santa napkins from last Christmas.

4. Our centerpiece will not be the tower of fresh fruit and flowers that I promised. Instead we will be displaying a hedgehog-like decoration hand-crafted from the finest construction paper. The artist assures me it is a turkey.

5. We will be dining fashionably late. The children will entertain you while you wait. I'm sure they will be happy to share every choice comment I have made regarding Thanksgiving, pilgrims and the turkey hotline. Please remember that most of these comments were made at 5:00 a.m. upon discovering that the turkey was still hard enough to cut diamonds. As accompaniment to the children's recital, I will play a recording of tribal drumming. If the children should mention that I don't own a recording of tribal drumming, or that tribal drumming sounds suspiciously like a frozen turkey in a clothes dryer, ignore them. They are lying.

6. We toyed with the idea of ringing a dainty silver bell to announce the start of our feast. In the end, we chose to keep our traditional method. We've also decided against a formal seating arrangement. When the smoke alarm sounds, please gather around the table and sit where you like. In the spirit of harmony, we will ask the children to sit at a separate table ... in a separate room ... next door.

7. Now, I know you have all seen pictures of one person carving a turkey in front of a crowd of appreciative onlookers. This will not be happening at our dinner. For safety reasons, the turkey will be carved in a private ceremony. I stress "private" meaning: Do not, under any circumstances, enter the kitchen to laugh at me. Do not send small, unsuspecting children to check on my progress. I have an electric knife. The turkey is unarmed. It stands to reason that I will eventually win. When I do, we will eat.

8. I would like to take this opportunity to remind my young diners that "passing the rolls" is not a football play. Nor is it a request to bean your sister in the head with warm tasty bread.

9. Oh, and one reminder for the adults: For the duration of the meal, and especially while in the presence of you diners, we will refer to the giblet gravy by its lesser-known name: Cheese Sauce. If a young diner questions you regarding the origins or type of Cheese Sauce, plead ignorance. Cheese Sauce stains.

10. Before I forget, there is one last change. Instead of offering a choice among 12 different scrumptious desserts, we will be serving the traditional pumpkin pie, garnished with whipped cream and small fingerprints. You will still have a choice; take it or leave it.

Martha Stewart will not be dining with us this Thanksgiving. She probably won't come next year either. I am thankful.

Puppy Sitting, Demos, and an Alien Baby

In an attempt to avoid only posting my own advertisements, like my last post for kintiko.net aka Kintiko Web Design, I thought I'd finally post about what's going on these days. This will be about what I am up to as I'll leave the wife to post her own stories. Where to start...

Last weekend we stayed over at my parents house, who live a total of 2 miles away from our home. They were out of town watching a football game in Kansas because my brother-in-law's brother (got that?) is on the starting line-up. With the folks gone, someone had to watch the puppy dog.

Brady, the dog, wore me out. Dogs need too much attention in my opinion, and with my Dad gone I was seen as the best substitute for the attention giver to those little brown eyes. The dog survived, spending most of its time sitting at the end of the recliner while I read a book.

Which brings me to my next topic, Harry Potter. The movie version of Goblet of Fire comes out this week, so I thought I'd read the book again. I really doubt I'll be done by Friday, but since it has been decreed by my better half that we shall no longer see midnight movie openings, I'll probably just wait until next week.

Monday I checked the mail and found a demo disc for my PlayStation 2. It had lots of demos for many new games I'd like to have. Some were lots of fun, a few were exactly what I expected, and a couple were disappointing to the point that I don't want them.

Shadow of the Colossus was by far the one I most longed to play. After some work I managed to kill the big giant and was given a trailer preview of the rest of the game. It was very cool.

Soul Calibur 3 was as polished as ever and the series still sits in my top spot of best fighter games ever. The custom character creation engine was lots of fun. The actual battles were very frustrating though, but that's really pretty normal. I just hope that if I actually buy it that I can master at least one character so that I'm not dying constantly. I'd really rather not destroy any more video game controllers.

There were other games on the disc too. Ratchet: Deadlocked didn't look very fun, even though I've been a big fan of the first two in the series. Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks was pretty much an updated Double Dragon, and actually seemed kinda fun (maybe worth a rental). I'd buy Sly Cooper 3, but I haven't even played Sly 2 yet. Finally, I didn't even play JakX racing as I can't stand racing games (except for Burnout or Mario Cart). I'm currently trying to get through Jak3, but all the races are ruining what should be a great story based platformer.

Just a few final things. Bridget claims that our child is either an alien or leaning very heavily to the Eakins side of the genetic fence, because her belly is really starting to grow. I finally one the lotto... twice... $5 on two tickets. Go me! To conclude I'd like to mention that there is a Honey Baked Ham in the mail that we shall be eating next Sunday and I just can't wait!

I've got lots of space and fun server side scripting options. If anyone needs a web page made for them, pass along my name. If I have the time, I'm only asking to put a few Google AdSense ads on the pages.

I think that is a pretty good bargain.

Teenagers are like Cats

These two have given us practice....



Neither teenagers nor cats turn their heads when you call them by name. (VERY TRUE)

No matter what you do for them, it is not enough. All humane efforts are barely adequate to compensate for the privilege of waiting on them hand and foot.

You rarely see a cat walking outside of the house with an adult human being, and it can be safely said that no teenager in his or her right mind wants to be seen I public with his or her parents.

Even if you tell jokes as well as Jay Leno, neither your cat nor your teen will ever crack a smile.

No cat or teenager shares your taste in music.

Cats and teenagers can lie on the living-room sofa for hours on end without moving.

Cats have nine lives. Teenagers carry on as if they did.

Cats and teenagers yawn in exactly the same manner, communicating a sense of complete and utter boredom. (I swear Satine has given me the cat verison of "Talk to the hand" to me)

Cats and teenagers do not improve anyone's furniture.

Cats that are free to roam outside sometimes have been known to return in the middle of the night to deposit a dead animal in your bedroom.

Thus, if you must raise teenagers, the best sources of advice are not other parents, but veterinarians.

Above all else, put out the food and do not make any sudden moves in their direction. When they make up their minds, they will finally come. It will be a triumphant moment for all concerned.
